To hear President Donald Trump tell it, Portland is the latest city taken over by terrorists and in desperate need of federal salvation. Residents say it’s making the city’s well-known weirdness something else entirely.

State authorities in Oregon on Sunday sued to halt the deployment of US troops to the northwestern city of Portland, a day after President Donald Trump ordered the move.

“Trump is launching an authoritarian takeover of Portland hoping to provoke conflict in my hometown,” Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) wrote on social platform X over the weekend.

Oregon National Guard troops could be deployed to Portland by Thursday, an Oregon Military Department spokesperson said. That timeline is based on the 96-hour standard the Oregon National Guard sets for how long it should take to mobilize troops once they’ve been called up.

Portland can expect to see boots on the ground by Thursday, an Oregon Military Department spokesperson told KOIN 6 News.

“Indeed, history shows that surging federal officials to Portland in response to protests shifts the temperature of those protests up, not down.”
